I really took my time with this book, controlled my inner “bookie monsterâ€, and really tried to savour each piece of information and hypothesis presented in this brilliant piece of work.I was also fortunate to read it right after finishing “Prisoners of Geography†by Tim Marshall – here is the link, in case you are interested: - https://www.amazon.de/dp/1783962437, which allowed me to compare both thesis and critically challenge each one of them.While “Prisoners of Geography†provides great examples of how geography influenced a country’s initial development and is important for military strategy, it does not provide a satisfactory answer to why some of today’s countries are prosperous while others are struggling.On “Why Nations Failâ€, the authors recognize that geography is not per se an argument to explain why some countries are more successful than others. Examples? North and South Korea, Botswana and Zimbabwe or even the US and Mexico. And while natural resources can highly benefit an economy, they do not really contribute to generalized wealth if a country is not inclusive – both economically and politically.This means that the book revolves around the idea that countries with inclusive political and economic institutions, which must allow citizen participation, and a certain degree of centralization generate incentives for entrepreneurship and, consequentially, economic growth. Basically, power distribution is essential for development, while power concentration in political and economic elites foments underdevelopment.The book is split in 13 incredibly interesting chapters that wonderfully present this thesis, oppose it to other common theses (cultural or geographical, for instance), provide examples to validate the main arguments and, finally, guess what the future may bring for a few nations (provided their path is unaltered).I learned so much than I could have asked for. This book is not only about economic hypotheses, but also gives you a lot of surprising information about the History and world events. Children picking cotton in Uzbekistan? The colonial atrocities in Indonesia? Botswana’s GDP per capita being bigger than some European countries? Those were some facts I did not know and surprised me. So this is an additional reason to recommend everyone this book. It is quite factual and can get slightly repetitive sometimes, but is so interesting that I consider it a must-read.
The central thesis of the book is quite simple: Prosperity is achieved when economical institutions are inclusive (allowing all citizens to participate and compete in markets under fair conditions) These inclusive economic institutions require inclusive political institutions, which allow different groups to participate in the political decision-making process. If that is not the case, if small elites are allowed to dominate politics, then they will manipulate economic institutions to their own benefit, extracting wealth from the other groups. Hence the labelling of these institutions as extractive. This thesis is elaborated on the 460 pages of the book, and the historical pathways of different societies leading to either inclusive or extractive institutions are analyzed.Examples acrually range from England to Kongo, from Australia to Argentina, from the old Maya Civilisation to modern day China. It is a dizzying array of examples, and occasionally one has the feeling that the historical events described in the book must have been more complex Therefore occasionally I have wondered whether these events really fit so perfectly into the line of arguments, which the authors have developed.And while they describe quite well what they understand as inclusive economic institutions (property rights, market access, 'level playing field' etc.) the definition of inclusive institutions remains a bit hazy. It's not democracy, but 'pluralism', 19th century Japan qualifies, Argentina does not.ButI found it a very interesting and thought-provoking book, which I wholeheartedly recommend. As somebody who is working in the field of development I find it lamentable that development orthodoxy since the Eighties is completely dominated by economic prescriptions (which hardly have worked). The rediscovering of politics and policies (and institutions) as an important precondition for growth and development was long overdue. And even if reality is too complexe to be fully covered even on 460 pages, this book certainly provides a good starting point.
Es gibt wenig Bücher, von denen man viel lernt, wenn man ein engagierter und fleissiger Leser ist. Dieses gehört dazu. Wie sehr ich das Buch schätze, merkte ich schon daran, dass ich es meiner Familie und guten Freunden oft empfahl und auch schenkte. Als ich mein Buch mit Notizen versehen hatte, lies ich es versehentlich im Hotel liegen. Trotz mühevoller Suche blieb es verschollen. Also erwarb ich ein weiteres und begann meine Anmerkungen erneut anzufügen - ich habe daraufhin gemerkt wie wirklich gut und fundiert die Überlegungen der Autoren sind. Chapeau!Fazit: ein Muss!
Sehr sehr gute politische Lektüre über genau das, was der Titel sagt.Unbedingt lesen. Das Buch ist sehr gut geschrieben, viele anschauliche Beispiele aus interessanten Blickwinkeln.A guide to support Organizations, Nation Building, Checks and Balances.
